Regulations of the Peer Review System

Galileu is a scientific journal in the field of legal science and related disciplines, published by Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa and directed by Ratio Legis – Centre for Research and Development in Legal Sciences.

Its purpose is the dissemination of scientific research carried out in Ratio Legis, as well of other research work conducted in the legal field or fields related to it in accordance with the following precepts:

1 – All the publications in “Galileu” journal will be subject to prior peer review under the so-called double-blind peer review process.

2 – Comments of a jurisprudential nature as well as doctrinal reviews will not be subject to this evaluation model.

3 – The referees will be included in a list, including experts of recognized merit in the various legal areas of Galileu magazine.

4 – The works proposed by the researchers for publication in Galileu magazine should be sent to the Board by email xxx.

5 – The works submitted must be original and scrupulously respect the ethical values of anti-plagiarism, as foreseen in an individual declaration signed by the authors.

6 – Once the articles have been received by the Board, they will be forwarded to the Editorial Board.

7 – The board shall assign the review of the articles to the referees included in the list for this purpose in accordance with their. The anonymity of the author vis-à-vis the referee must always be guaranteed, as well as the opposite situation.

8 – The evaluation to be carried out by the referees must focus on the scientific quality of the work submitted, taking particular note of the following items:

a) Importance of the subject matter;
b) Content of the research carried out;
c) Quality and quantity of the bibliography, be it jurisprudential or legal;
d) Technical rigour in the approach to the topic;
e) Consistency of the intellectual legal strand followed;
f) Correction and hermeneutical clarity

9 – The opinions of the referees must be duly written on a specific evaluation form, which they will previously receive from their president and with the knowledge of the Management Board and the Editorial Board.

10 – The referees’ opinions must be submitted within 30 days from the date of receipt of the work.

11 – Failure to comply with the aforementioned deadline will lead to the choice of a new referee.

12 – The opinions of the referees shall, for the purpose of publication, state one of the following:

a) Approved for publication
b) Rejected for publication
c) Indicated for rewriting

13 – Whenever the referees specify the need to rewrite the work, they will suggest it to the author according to the referee’s own guidelines.

14 – If the author chooses not to accept the suggested changes, the work will be deemed unsuitable for publication in Galileu.

15 – If the work is rewritten as indicated by the referees, the work will be reviewed again by the same referee, who must assess whether or not his/her previous indications were respected to be able to publish the work in question.

16 – The Editorial Board reserves the right to reject works that materially or conceptually collide with the rules and values of the journal.

17 – Any omission not mentioned in these regulations will be decided and resolved by the Editorial Board.
